Cairo:Otherscape is live! + Adventure Update
about 1 year ago
– Tue, Apr 15, 2025 at 09:33:52 AM
Hello companions,
As we've noted in the last update, we've launched the Cairo:Otherscape Kickstarter today, we we'll tell you about that below.
The Heap-Thing of Skunk Glen
However, work on Legend In the Mist continues in full force! We're working on the starter adventure and the Narrator's chapter as promised, in an effort to complete the core book this month.
Currently, the working title of the adventure is The Heap-Thing of Skunk Glen but that may yet change. It's a beautiful folktale-inspired rustic fantasy adventure that can either set up your locally-centered campaign, or be a great prelude to an epic journey.
We'll send another update on where we stand with all this next week. Stay tuned.
Cairo:OS, the new Egyptian Expansion for :Otherscape, is now live on Kickstarter - and FUNDED!
If you love the Mist Engine, and you love cyberpunk, then venture with us into a dystopian Cairo, where corporate cults have dubbed themselves the new pharaohs and everyone is scrambling to obtain powerful artifacts in a new magical and technological arms race.
Play as rebels, mercenaries, mystics, and hackers and combine cybernetics with the magical powers of Egyptian and Arabian mythology.
Last chance to back Zamanora! + Challenges Chapter Update

The art of Mark Hretskyi, which will be included in the Challenges chapter
Good day companions!
We have some updates for you as promised. While it is April Fool's Day, and while there are House Hobs and Brownies all around us, there are unfortunately no falsities and jokes here today. We're much too busy for that - have to finish the cobbler's shoes before sunrise!
Zamanora, The Balkan-Slavic Setting for Legend In The Mist, Enters Its Last 48 hours!
If you're already loving what you see from Legend In The Mist and you anticipate wanting MORE CONTENT to play with in six months or so, you should grab Zamanora as it nears its Kickstarter ending on Thursday.
It's packed with authentic player options, creatures, and adventures from the world of Balkan and Slavic cautionary tales, spread over two books and lots of accessories.
Backers not only get the best price, but also access to some Kickstarter exclusive bundles and add-ons, such as the Collector's Box; early access to content and the team's playtesting sessions; and, as always, help unlock more content by contributing to stretch goals. You can even bundle in print copies of Legend In The Mist if you didn't get them on this project.

The Challenges Chapter Is Coming Later This Week
As we've shared on Discord and in a comment here, we've been working diligently on the Challenges chapter, but some unexpected delays did set us back this time and we will release it only toward the end of the week. We will continue to send updates on the exact time on the Discord #litm-updates channel (here's the Discord invite link, if you're new).
You will be getting the chapter as part of the updated Core Book Playtesting PDF, which will be sent to all backers and late pledges via DriveThruRPG. (Only backers and late pledgers will receive this playtesting file. Pre-orderers will receive the file upon its official release.)
What's Inside
In addition to everything from previous updates, here's what you'll find in the soon-to-come updated PDF. Note that this chapter was greatly expanded thanks to the $300K Expanded Survival & Bestiary stretch goal!
Challenge Chapter Intro: Challenge types, how to use their Threats & Consequences, tags, and Limits, and (my favorite) more insight into Journeys and their component Vignettes, which are small Challenges that Heroes meet along the way and resolve with a single Quick outcome.
70 Challenges
20 Journeys
40 standalone Vignettes you can plug into any Journey
20 Power Sets you can use to enhance any Challenge
Challenges and Journeys grouped into 11 story "zones": Homestead & Village, Outskirts & Fields, On The Trail, In The Wilds, Open Water, Forsaken Places, Town & City, The Castle, On The Battlefield, Blighted Badlands, Vaults of Darkness
Rather than a condensed card, Challenges are now formatted in the style of a "cooking recipe" for improved readability (see example below).
Some Challenges are also graced by the art of Mark Hretskyi, an incredible artist from the Ukraine who has joined the team to help us deliver this book sooner!
Layout test page (Challenge not final). How do you like the readability of this style of Challenge layout?
What To Expect (Reminder)
This Core Book combines rustic with other genres to support any fantasy game, so it might feel a little more generic fantasy in some parts (although we still focus mainly on rustic fantasy). The setting book will lean into rustic fantasy will full force.
It's a playtesting copy, which means it's a **partial preview** of the core book meant to allow you to start playing the game and experiencing it.
Content-wise, it's a final draft. While not the absolute final version, what you find in the file represents the finished and complete product. We may yet make some changes, but we don't plan to make many. The text is not yet proofread.
Art- and design-wise, it's a Work In Progress (WIP). Art is being added as it is created, but a lot of art is still missing. The graphic design is in its final draft, but still being tweaked.
What's Next?
Challenges Chapter Feedback
Once the Challenge chapter is released later this week, we will be taking feedback through the Discord server (invite here) where there is already a thread in the #feedback channel for the Challenges chapter.
Adventure Coming
As promised, the Challenges chapter will also have a short starter adventure, which will be added later.
Next Drop
Our next update will be on April 15th, as we launch the Cairo:Otherscape Kickstarter. Our next drop will be two days later, on April 17th, and is planned to include the aforementioned adventure, and parts of the Narrator chapter. We hope to complete the book by the following drop on May 1st, with the complete Narrator's chapter and solo rules. Meanwhile, we have also been working on the Hearts of Ravensdale book, the pregens, the Narrator's screen, and so on, and will share those as we complete them.
Physical Rewards Timeline
We will reevaluate the physical shipping date as soon as we complete the delivery of the digital game, but it can be expected to be 3-4 months from digital completion. We are working on preparing files to print as we finish them to reduce that lead time as much as possible, and have printers lined up for this project. More to come as we progress.
---
That's all for now, companions! Stay tuned for the Challenges chapter as it comes your way later this week.
Safe journeys!

Magick!!!

Hey companions,
The Magic Chapter Is Here!
We're thrilled to share with you one of the juiciest parts of this game - the Magic Cauldron chapter, which not only offers you many different ready-to-play Ways of Magic, but also puts the tools in your hands to create ANY. MAGIC. SYSTEM. YOU. WANT!
This chapter was expanded thanks to a stretch goal we unlocked during the campagin.
We are now sending the updated Core Book Playtesting PDF to all backers and late pledges via DriveThruRPG. Within the next few hours, you should receive an email invite to download this file from DriveThruRPG. If you encountered any issues, please reach out to [email protected].
(Only backers and late pledgers received this playtesting file. Pre-orderers will receive the file upon its official release.)
What's Inside
In addition to everything from previous updates, here's what you'll find in the updated PDF:
Fundamentals of Magic, a section that walks you through using your standard themes, tags, Quests, and Consequences to represent magic in your game.
Brewing Your Own Magical Ways, the meat of this update, offering you a list of Ingredients -- magical rules like Magic Is Collected or Magic Requires A Ritual -- which you can mix together into your own Way of Magic!
Recipes for how to brew popular magic styles, from Patron Magic to Scholarly Magic (Expecto Patronum!!!), by combining Ingredients.
Prepared Ways of Magic, fully fleshed out and ready to play, along with theme kits, including Alchemy & Herbalism, Runic Invocation, Spirit Binding, Shapeshifting, and Witchcraft. Later we will add Sorcery, Fey Patronage, and Landshaping.
Also Rotes, a way to create spell write-ups for your players (for especially unique actions, because most action don't need a write up in Legend In The Mist)
We're adding more and more art as we complete each piece!
What To Expect (Reminder)
It's a playtesting copy, which means it's a **partial preview** of the core book meant to allow you to start playing the game and experiencing it.
Content-wise, it's a final draft. While not the absolute final version, what you find in the file represents the finished and complete product. We may yet make some changes, but we don't plan to make many. The text is not yet proofread.
Art- and design-wise, it's a Work In Progress (WIP). Most of the art is missing or not yet colored and the graphic design is in its final draft, but still being tweaked.
This Core Book combines rustic with other genres to support any fantasy game, so it might feel a little broad in scope in some parts (although we still focus mainly on rustic fantasy). The setting book will lean into rustic fantasy will full force.

Magic Chapter Feedback
Please dive in and tell us what you think! We will be taking feedback through the Discord server (invite here) where there is already a thread in the #feedback channel for the Magic Chapter.
How Complicated Does This Game Look To You?
We're also looking for feedback about balancing rich content with lots of options vs. an approachable game that does not daunt newcomers. Let us know if you think we have struck a good balance so far or if you think this can be improved -- in this discord discussion.
Next Drop
Our next drop will be on April 1st -- 'tis no joke -- with the Narrator chapter or the Challenges chapter, depending on which is ready first. We have a roster of perils ready for you to throw at your rustic heroes, from nasty village neighbors through cunning spirits to mighty dragons...
A couple of thousands of backers have already pledged for this Slavic and Balkan cautionary tales setting for Legend In The Mist from our friends at Eren Chronicles. If you haven't had the chance to check it out, here it is:
Speaking of Ways of Magic -- in additions to theme kits, special improvements, Challenges, locales, adventures, and more -- Zamanora will include new Ways of Magic such as Folkloric Magic, Ceremonial Magic (which can be practiced by people with no magic ability), and a special focus on curses. Not to mention it's a great crossover setting to get your D&D friends to into Legend In The Mist!

Zamanora is live! + Complete Hero Chapter and Action Grimoire
over 1 year ago
– Tue, Mar 04, 2025 at 09:02:00 AM
Hey companions,
Zamanora: Ballad Of The Witch just launched!
In our last update, we told you about this new Kickstarter from Eren Chronicles for a dual-system D&D and Legend In The Mist setting inspired by Slavic and Balkan cautionary tales.
Well, it just went live, so check it out - the Kickstarter offers early bird rewards as well as a free demo you can download!
A CROSSOVER SETTING to get your D&D friends to into Legend In The Mist
MORE THEME KITS for adventurers unique to Zamanora like the Bogatyr warrior, Guslar bard, or Hearth priest, as well as for playable creatures such as Chorts and Haunt
MORE CHALLENGES for a variety of creatures from Slavic and Balkan folklore including baba yaga, kikimora, leshy, and many others.
MORE MAGIC SYSTEMS for Poppet Magic and Ceremonial Magic, which allows lay individuals with no magical powers to lay curses and summon horrors just through the power of rituals.
VILLAGE LOCALES each with their own haunting secrets and dangers within the village, at the edge of the village lights, and in the darkness beyond.
. New Drop Today: Complete Hero Chapter + Action Grimoire
PIcking up from where we left on Friday, we are currently re-sending and updating the Core Book Playtesting PDF and the Action Grimoire PDF for all backers and late pledges via DriveThruRPG.
The Action Grimoire - a 100-page reference guide for all imaginable actions and reactions in Legend In The Mist. This booklet is designed to give inspiration for actions and to help players coming from more heavily-structured RPGs make the most out of the game's open system. The equivalent Action Database was a huge hit among players of :Otherscape. Today file (v0.2) also includes the full index of the Grimoire at the back of the PDF, so you can easily find the action you're thinking of.
Might rules - The Core Book now includes rules for managing Heroes and Challenges of a different order of magnitude, so you can have Heroes of mixed power levels in the same group, and still keep everyone challenged. (We got a lot of feedback from you since Friday and we're working on making the examples more accurate for this section.)
Character Development rules - How to gain more tags and Special Improvements? How to use Quests? When to mark Abandon and Milestone? What happens when you evolve a theme or replace it? We also rolled out a new long-term Hero development terms called Promise & Fulfillment, and new Quintessences to pick from (previously Veteran Improvements).
Lots of corrections and clarifications. We've been working to improve the explanations and the examples based on the feedback you provided on Discord.
We're adding art as we complete each piece!

Coming Soon: A Balkan-Slavic Setting For Legend In The Mist!
– Fri, Feb 21, 2025 at 07:37:22 AM
Hello Companions,
We interrupt another day of Legend In The Mist bookcrafting (doing final touch ups on those Might rules!) to share with you an exciting project we've been accompanying:
ZAMANORA is a rustic fantasy setting inspired by Balkan and Slavic cautionary tales, and published by Eren Chronicles. It will reveal an enchanted and dangerous world where communities huddle around the fire in remote villages, and where every step into the outside world means encountering strange beings and risking one's life and soul.
Sounds familiar? Yes, this will be a supplement for Legend In The Mist!
Playable species (theme kits) for mischievous Chorts and wraith-like Haunts
Unique local variations of typical "classes" (theme kits) such as bogatyr warriors, priests of the hearth, and guslar bards
Fascinating new magic systems: ceremonial magic and poppet magic
Tons of creatures of local lore (Challenges) to add to your LitM game such as Bolotniks, Kikimoras, and Leshes (some of whom you may know through The Witcher)
ZAMANORA already has over 4000 followers for this project, which we hope will continue to grow untli their March 4th launch.
ZAMANORA is also going to be the first dual system book of Dungeons & Dragons and Legend In The Mist, which makes it a real no-brainer to back. You'll be able to play it with your die hard D&D friends, but also have full support to convert them to true Legend In The Mist heroes, all in one book.
Seeing as these cultural influences constitute half my DNA (Bulgarian), I'm personally very excited about this setting. The guys at Eren Chronicles know their stuff, and have produced beautiful books before, so when they pitched this to me, I was on board in a heartbeat.
